The Ébouchon is a briar block cut from the root burl of the Erica arborea tree, commonly known as briar. It is one of the most essential raw forms used in traditional pipe making.
Unlike plateaux, which are cut from the outer edge of the burl, the ébouchon comes from the denser, inner part of the root. This central position gives it a particularly compact and solid structure, highly valued for its heat resistance and durability.
Ébouchons are ideal for series production pipes and beginner models, but they are equally appreciated by experienced pipe makers who seek ease of shaping and a compact form. Despite their smaller size, ébouchons can feature beautiful flame or birdseye grain patterns.
Note on quality:
As with all briar cuts, grain pattern and surface purity may vary. Each ébouchon is unique—carefully selected and air-dried to ensure optimal results in pipe crafting.
